Cleating a cracked top on a Martin DM. – SF Guitarworks

Today we fixed up a Martin guitar that had several cracks in the top. To do this, we make a cleat and glue it over the crack. Sounds simple, right? The devil is in the details… First, we make a cleat out of matching wood to go over the crack. Here, Spencer has made a perfectly symmetrical hexagonal cleat out spruce:

The guys at Backwoods Guitar in Sedalia,MO don't seem to be afraid to take on anything repair wise. My 45 year old Ovation had collected some pretty serious dents in the neck. After taking it to them I'm probably the only one that can tell where the dents were. Very reasonable charge too. Don't know where you are so shipping might be a factor.

Yes that can be fixed. I would use an approx 1" wide strip of very thin plywood glued to the inside of the top beneath the crack then wick some superglue into the crack itself. Similarly use superglue to fill the cracks in the varnish. The repair will not be invisible but it should stabilize the damage and the guitar will play OK.

However, both guitars cost well over $1000, so the cost of repair to cost of the guitar ratio was significantly less. Also, from your description of the crack, it sounds like your crack is worse than mine.

The sound can be affected by cracks, but often it is not. If repaired you want to be sure the person doing the work knows what he/she is doing. If you like the guitar keep it and/or fix it.
