Shear Strength Degradation Behavior of Offshore Clay Under ...

Deformation characteristics of Malaysian offshore clay subjected to undrained cyclic constant-volume direct simple shear loading were investigated at different over-consolidation ratios and strain levels. Cyclic strain-controlled tests were undertaken with cyclic shear strain amplitudes ranging from 0.6% to 5%. As the number of cycles increased, it was observed that the cyclic stress amplitude ...

Characteristics of soft marine clay under cyclic loading ...

Soft clay forms a big proportion of the seabed ground. In a marine environment, waves, wind, and earthquakes, often known as cyclic loads, are a main contributor to the loading of the seabed. The safety of offshore structures relies on the response of soft marine clay to these cyclic loadings. Its very fine-grained composition, and hence low permeability, is the defining factor for soft marine ...

Fig.1 In situ shear device on location . The apparatus was in reality a gigantic self-boring sampling tube that trimmed out a vertical core of undisturbed clay, one meter in diameter, as it burrowed into the ground. When a shear test was desired the boring process could be stopped and the clay core within the device sheared in simple undrained ...

Understanding the behavior of soft sensitive clays is a key aspect of geotechnical design, especially in those regions where constructions are planned in marine clay areas. In Finland, one of the major geotechnical issues is the stability and deformation of the railway embankments located on soft soil deposits. The phenomenon of Quick Clays | Geoengineer

Quick clay behavior is primarily characterized by a material property known as sensitivity, a term utilized in soil mechanics to define the ratio between the undisturbed and the remolded shear strength of a soil material. In Figure 1, stress-strain response examples of clay materials (sensitive and non-sensitive) are presented. In sensitive ...

The degradation of undrained shear strength of undisturbed ...

Abstract: The behavior of stress, strain, pore pressure and static undrained shear strength of undisturbed or remolded marine silty clay samples under undrained cyclic loading conditions is analyzed. The degradation of undrained shear strength is related to the cyclic strain and accumulated pore pressure produced by undrained clyclic loading.

1980's measured the in situ undrained shear strength using an Acker torque wrench with thick drillers vanes. This equipment is crude and unreliable in soft sensitive clays. Beginning in 1994, the undrained shear strength of the soft clay at the site was measured in situ using the Geonor vane borer H-10 testing apparatus (Fig. 6).

A series of undrained, simple shear tests were performed on undisturbed, soft, marine clay from the continental slope of Israel in a direct simple shear device (NGI) and in a new torsional shear apparatus. The new apparatus is described, and the problematics of simple shear testing in both devices are discussed. Most previous torsional shear testing on clays reported in the literature has been ...

ABSTRACT In order to investigate the cyclic shear properties of clays for insitu condition, undisturbed marine clays have been sampled from various places in Japan. Breakdown of the clay structure, including cementation bonds, is the assumed cause of lower shear resistance at small strains, whereas at large strains the shear resistance is governed mainly by the water content, which for soft clay samples, reconsolidated to the in situ effective stresses, will be lower, and the strength thereby higher, the ...

Cyclic Simple Shear Behavior of Fine Grained Soils

Consolidated, constant volume (CCV), cyclic laboratory shear tests were performed on marine clay soils. The Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) direct simple shear device, modified for cyclic loading (square wave) capabilities, was used for these tests. Two clays were investigated; a natural undisturbed Gulf of Mexico clay and a reconstituted Pacific Illite.
