yttrium (symbol Y) Silver-grey, metallic element in group III of the periodic table.First isolated in 1828 by German chemist Friedrich Wöhler, it is found with lanthanide elements (rare-earth metals) in monazite sand, bastnasite, and gadolinite.It resembles the lanthanides in its chemistry. Yttrium was found in lunar rock samples collected by the Apollo 11 space mission.
